Cut Your Bills: 20 Easy Ways to Save Energy at Home

Saving Energy

Saving energy not only helps the environment, but it can also save you money on your energy bills. Here are 20 energy-saving tips to help you reduce your energy consumption at home.

turn off the lights
  1. Turn off lights and appliances when they’re not in use. This is an easy and effective way to save energy.

 LED bulbs
  1. Use LED bulbs: LED bulbs use 75% less energy and last 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs.

Unplug electronics

  1. Unplug electronics when they’re not in use: Many electronics, such as TVs and computers, continue to draw power even when they’re turned off. Unplugging them can help save energy.

 programmable thermostat
  1. Install a programmable thermostat: A programmable thermostat allows you to set the temperature to adjust automatically when you’re not at home. We love our Nest thermostat! Rebates are available via Enbridge and the Canada Greener Homes Grant.

 ceiling fan
  1. Install a ceiling fan: A ceiling fan can help circulate air and make a room feel cooler, allowing you to set your thermostat higher in the summer.

 Proper insulation
  1. Insulate your home: Proper insulation can help keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. See Enbridge’s insulation rebate programs here.

 energy-efficient appliances
  1. Use energy-efficient appliances: Energy-efficient appliances use less energy and can save you money on your energy bills.

 Wash clothes
  1. Wash clothes in cold water: Washing clothes in cold water can save energy and reduce wear and tear on your clothes.

 Air dry clothes
  1. Air dry clothes: Instead of using a dryer, try air drying your clothes on a clothesline or drying rack.

 Seal air leaks
  1. Seal air leaks: Air leaks around windows and doors can let in drafts and increase your energy bills. Sealing these leaks can help save energy. Enbridge and the Canada Greener Home Grant have programs available to help offset the costs.

    low-flow showerhead

  2. Use a low-flow showerhead: Low-flow showerheads use less water and can save energy.

 Leaky faucets
  1. Fix any leaks: Leaky faucets and pipes can waste water and energy. Fixing these leaks can save both resources.

 Dishwashers are more energy-efficient
  1. Use a dishwasher: Dishwashers are more energy-efficient than washing dishes by hand. Just make sure only to run it when it’s full.

 Pressure cookers
  1. Put your Instapot and slow cooker to work: Pressure cookers use less energy and cook food faster than a traditional stovetop or oven; slow cookers use less energy too.

 install shading devices
  1. Plant trees or install shading devices: Trees and shading devices can block the sun’s rays and help keep your home cooler in the summer, which can save energy.

 Solar panels use
  1. Install solar panels: Solar panels use the sun’s energy to generate electricity. You can read more about solar panels here.

 smart power strip
  1. Use a smart power strip: A smart power strip allows you to control multiple appliances and electronics from your smartphone, so you can easily turn them off when they’re not in use.

 tankless water heater
  1. Use a tankless water heater: Tankless water heaters only heat water when it’s needed, which can save energy compared to a traditional tank-style water heater.

 Use a water heater blanket
  1. Use a water heater blanket: Wrapping a water heater blanket around your water heater can help insulate it and reduce heat loss, which can save energy.

 natural gas grill
  1. Use a natural gas grill: Natural gas grills use less energy than charcoal or propane grills.

 Upgrade to an energy-efficient furnace
  1. Upgrade to an energy-efficient furnace: If you’re an Enbridge customer, you can access up to $1000 to offset the cost. See program details here.

By implementing some of these energy-saving tips, you can save money on your energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint.
